If you want to buy a car in Florida, knowing the costs beyond the sticker price helps you compare deals. This guide covers what drivers in Sarasota, Manatee, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Charlotte and DeSoto counties should expect.
Sales tax
Florida charges a 6% state sales tax on vehicle purchases, and most counties add a discretionary surtax. The county surtax is based on where you live and registers the vehicle, and it only applies to the first $5,000 of the price.
Because rates can change, ask for an out-the-door quote so the exact tax for your county is included.
Title and registration
When you buy from a dealer, the dealer usually handles the title and registration paperwork for you. If this is your first vehicle registered in Florida, expect a one-time initial registration fee in addition to the normal title and plate fees.
Private-party purchases are handled at your county tax collector's office.
Insurance before you drive away
Florida requires proof of insurance to register a vehicle. Have your insurance company ready to add the new car the day you buy it.
